Do your work.

Do your work, and I shall know you. Do your work, and you shall reinforce yourself.     – Ralph Waldo Emerson

You may have noticed a theme here i.e. quotes/prompts from Emerson's Self Reliance as suggested by Seth Godin and friends His not so subtle way of  encouraging me [and others] to WRITE! about whatever...just write.

I facilitated a session during Open Space that posed the question. above.  I felt the need to inject some art process/drawing/creating and was channeling the energy I retain from Sandra Nickeson and Carol Lark whose names I did speak in that place.  Jean and Imelda from Ballinrobe Estate [social housing] FRC [family resource center] joined me....we all were tired of talking.   We had lovely wax blocks from Germany and big paper.  Imelda drew the map with her color code for Ireland, realizing after putting down the crayons that she had not colored Northern Ireland. ...emotional insight, consternation, reflection which she later shared in the larger group courageously [which did contain two Irish from the North].

The marking of sacred sites, reflections on the land and its mystery and magic were added by Jean.  They both recalled the monumental Giant's Causeway to which they traveled together.  Reading the words added give depth and texture to the colors and shapes.  I hope to see them this week in the West for a repeat of the dance we had together by the lake to encourage health and cleansing in ourselves and in the world.

That's the job, that's our work.   To:  Go in.  Take a risk.  Find out.

Days Three/ Four/ Five...Initiators weekend at Glencree

I will not hide my tastes or aversions. I will so trust that what is deep is holy,  If we follow the truth, it will bring us out safe at last. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Glencree Retreat Center sits in the Wicklow Mountains north of Dublin complete with a sacred site i.e. a wishing tree and a holy well.  It was built as a place for intentional peace and reconciliation  process during the Irish 'troubles'...meant as a neutral site.  Outside of the funky rooms and restaurant, it was quite lovely.
The picture was taken on Sunday after the rain with heavy mist and mystery in the air.

The retreat was very special....I am going to try NOT to say 'interesting' or 'important'.  It was pointed out by a community worker that artist-speak includes those words way too often....thanks, Paul!  So we were about 20 artists, community workers, program people etc. meeting in Open Space to identify issues and avenues to address them.  We ate beautiful healthy food (thank you, Suzanne and Dragan) and some of us slept way too little!  Among these people are the women from the Oughterard FRC [where I will travel today with Eleanor who is there too.  There are two women from the Ballybodin FRC who surprised us and themselves with meaningful reflection and a chance to connect with the land in movement and music.  You will also see the three artists from Cork  where we will travel on Saturday next to view an installation with the theme of HOME [thinking of you, guys! at ppcs].

At first and as always, I was apprehensive about the occasion, the group, the work to be done. The process carried us through to safety first and then holiness in terms of connection, commonalities, and really good craic!

Day Two: Dublin///EAPN

Alternative Paths
When good is near you, when you have life in yourself, it is not by any known or accustomed way; you shall not discern the foot-prints of any other; you shall not see the face of man; you shall not hear any name; the way, the thought, the good, shall be wholly strange and new. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Definitely the most non-tourist  activity
On Thursday 9 June, I went with Ed Carroll to attend the meeting of the European Anti-Poverty Network  in the city centre of Dublin.  Blue Drum is a voting member and may be the only arts organisation to belong.  The logo is visually very appealing and the texture of the 3-D elements are simple and satisfying. I was very humbled to witness the workings of this body of concerned citizens who work in Ireland and with other countries on the European stage to address the issue of poverty and privilege.

Like most everyone, they are facing significant issues of funding, staffing, and effectiveness while working toward authenticity, connection, and influence.

So good was near to me, albeit new and unaccustomed

I have much respect for the work being done in Ireland and in Blue Drum in particular.

Emerson and Open Space

To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, that is genius. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
What is burning deep inside of you? If you could spread your personal message RIGHT NOW to 1 million people, what would you say?
(Author: Eric Handler)

This is the blogger/writers' prompt via Seth Godin and his empire. He is my hero [or one of them]. Tomorrow we go to the retreat at Glencree to talk in Open Space about just such 'burning' matters in terms of art/culture/community/access etc.  Technically, I could be talking to a million people (-:] i.e. that web thing you know.  I want the world to know that I feel like I am in the right place at the right time.  I am ready to: ask questions/ listen for answers//take a risk///expect the unexpected.

Black Rock/Dublin and NEXT

I sat in a pub last night with one Guinness and four Irishmen who were speaking so fast that my tired brain was having a very hard time to process.  This morning Ed and I walked his friend Seamus McGinnis to the airport bus....he is going to Chicago from whence I just came....to teach and consult at the Art Institute.  I am hoping we can connect when he comes back.  Robert/Alicia will be here by then....

We walked back and had breakfast and a coffee at the little shopping center in Black Rock.  The stores were still shut, and this one caught my eye.  It's a shop for baby clothes etc, [clever title, eh Robin?] but, with the shutters down, the word itself seemed meaningful i.e. next? who me? where? when? how?

Tomorrow we go to Glencree for a retreat and an open space experience. About 20 people from all over Ireland [and me] will come together to ask and listen and plan for what's next....
